** About Carse, Rescobie, Angus (Forfarshire):
(1855 - "The father at present in Edinburgh, and in distress." The following is from the General Register Office for Scotland: "It is very unusual for such an annotation to appear against a birth entry. We can only presume that . . the registrar was recording what he felt was pertinent information. The term 'in distress' would normally mean that the person was either unemployed or was obtaining assistance from the Parish. Although the father is noted as being a butler he may have lost his position & had to turn to the parish for help. . . of course conjecture . . "); Rescobie is north-east of Forfar, which was the centre of the jute industry in the area. According to the 1850 "Map of the Basin of the Tay, including the greater part of Perth Shire, Strathmore and the Braes of Angus or Forfar" there is indicated "Carse" which appears to be a house, noted "GRAY, Esq." William GRAY of "The Inns, Kirkton of Collace" was informant on the death registration of Robert's brother, John MITCHELL in Kinrossie, Collace. Perhaps there is a connection between the GRAY & MITCHELL families. More research is required.
