Annie Donaldson MITCHELL Obituary, 1941

"Mrs. Anie Smith Dies
DEATH COMES TO BAY PIONEER
Mrs. Annie Donaldson SMITH of 4692 Dunbar, who was the first white woman settler at English Bay, died Sunday in St. Paul's Hospital. She was 82.
Coming to this country from Scotland in 1888 with her husband, the late A. B. Sayer Smith, she raised her family in a home where the old English Bay pier later stood.
Mrs. Smith was born in Vale of Leven & was married in nearby Glasgow in 1881. They came to Canada soon after their marriage, & lived on the prairies before coming to the coast.
Her husband was accountant & at one time acting manager of the old Hotel Vancouver. Later he joined the City Hall staff.
GOLDEN WEDDING IN 1931.
Both Mr. & Mrs. SMITH were active in the St. Andrew's & Caledonian Society, & were well known in pioneer circles. They were widely honoured at the time of their golden wedding anniversary in 1931.
The children were educated at Aberdeen school, set in the dense forest where Burrard & Smithe streets intersect today.
Their son, Alexander, was the first white child born in what is now the West End. English Bay's first wedding was that of their daughter, Mrs. J. S. GALL, now of 3989 Marguerite.
Mrs. SMITH is survived by three sons, R. B. in Nelson, & Alex & Fred Bryson here; three daughters, Mrs. J. S. GALL & Mrs. John McGREGOR in Vancouver, & Mrs. Fred WATERS in Nelson; 14 grandchildren & six greatgrandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Simmons & McBride Chapel with Rev. E. D. BRADEN officiating."
