Great Fire:

On 04 Nov 1886, a disastrous house fire started just north of what is now the WALKER House (GILBERT's Hotel in the 1860's, on the corner of High & Grosvenor), but was at that time the GILBERT property. (A Southampton map, dated 1856, shows the J. GILBERT Hotel on the harbour, by the river mouth.) High winds spread the flames to the house across Grosvenor Street from the GILBERT property, but very fortunately for the GILBERT's, the fire did not consume their buildings. The flames did move east for two blocks along High Street, leaving more than 30 families homeless, destroying more than 50 buildings in just four hours, including St. Paul's Anglican Church. Although there is no particular mention of the GILBERT family during this fire, it is almost certain that they were very much involved in fire fighting & helping the destitute afterward.
