Herbert Joseph GILBERT arrived in Vancouver in the autumn of 1907 & was active at Christ Church (granted a lay reader's license), & was authorised to take temporary charge of St. Mark's services & Sunday school. He became the first churchwarden of St. Thomas' South Vancouver, & also of St. George's, Fairview. He was instrumental in selecting the wilderness location for the (new) St. Mark's in Kitsilano at Second Avenue & (1805) Larch Street, a high place which sloped away in all directions. He was part of the volunteer force building the church, with work beginning 24 May 1909. His older son Reg also helped in the construction. Opening service was 18 Jul 1909. (The first St. Mark's was built in 1908 * at First Avenue & Maple Street.) He taught Sunday School at St. Mark's (Kitsilano) as recently as three years before his death.
