Letter from a friend recalling the early days (excerpts):
Golden West Hotel, San Diego Calif., March 3/[19]52
Dear Maud [Maud Donaldson GALL, Maud Donaldson SMITH],
A letter received by me from my old friend
. . contained only a page
from the News Herald of Feby 21st. In this is a write up
of "First to Wed at English Bay" which I read with
great interest. Is it that long ago? Doesn't seem so.
. . Let me see if my memory is correct.
I was living with Jack [John Stewart Smith GALL] . .
at the corner of Water & Cordova Sts. I
can see Jack, . . busy in the living room on Saturday, Smoking cigarettes
& indulging in liquid refreshment loading
cartridge shells for shooting on the morrow. Wonder
the place wasn't burnt down, the ingredients
were all there for a good blaze. In the fall
of 1900 [?], or rather in the spring, Jack asked me
where I spent my Sunday's. I told him at the Beach
English Bay at the SMITH's. Jack says I would like
to go with you. I said OK.
